  Hall D Staff Meeting, March 30, 2020

    Announcements (Eugene)

  * If really needed, staff can access the campus, for example, to
    retrieve medication from one's office. Contact Eugene who will in
    turn contact Rolf Ent for approval.
  * Hall walk-throughs are being conducted as per plan. Tim reported
    that the walkers are making daily log entries.
  * The Lab's stay-at-home policy for non-essential personnel has been
    extended to the end of April.
  * Governor Northam has just issued a stay-at-home order
    <https://www.governor.virginia.gov/media/governorvirginiagov/executive-actions/EO-55-Temporary-Stay-at-Home-Order-Due-to-Novel-Coronavirus-(COVID-19).pdf>
    for the state of Virginia. Tim ran down the details.
  * The Lab is thinking of running again this calendar year in the event
    that plans for the CHL shutdown are seriously affected. For Hall D,
    that might mean picking up where we left off a week ago and
    executing the last six weeks of the run.
  * Budget: the President's budget calls for a 15% cut.

    Individual Reports

      Sascha

  * working on preparations for ERR for SRC
      o getting estimates for background with deuteron target
  * working on PrimEx luminosity determination
      o resolving issue with tagger microscope

      Alexandre

  * working with Mark D. and Justin Stevens on proposal for the GDH sum
    rule measurement
  * looking at beamline data from past runs for correlations seen in run
    just past
  * reviewing papers from Halls A and B
  * working on a review of the strong coupling constant

      Elton

  * working on finishing the NIM paper
  * working on preparations for the neutral pion polarizability (NPP)
    proposal
      o conducting tutorials for Monte Carlo studies of NPP issues

      Beni

  * working on finishing TOF calibration for the run just past
  * evaluating performance of TOF II including charged track matching issues
  * analyzing data from SiPM dark current data for the start counter
  * working on tagger hodoscope calibration, work needed for the
    accidental scaling factor determination
  * attending Elton's NPP study tutorials

      Igal

  * working on FCAL calibration for PrimEx-η
  * working on analyzing Compton events from the PrimEx-η run

      Keigo

  * working on FDC alignment and calibration
      o looking at Millipede-determined T_0 s
  * working on new features and bug fixes for the online monitoring

      Hovanes

  * working on understanding source of annoying alarms in the Counting Room
  * assessing radiation damage on the profiler prototype
  * looking at Ω baryon analysis

      Lubomir

  * J/ψ analysis
      o Looking at systematics of dip in cross section
      o evaluating additional studies suggested at Workfest, some may be
        hard due to limited statistics
  * papers supporting the case for a Chinese EIC have appeared citing
    our J/ψ result
  * looking at data on GEM TRD
  * with 90/10 xenon/CO_2 mix, wire TRD has maximum drift time of 1.6 μs
    for a 3-cm drift cell, could be used for GlueX

      Mark D.

  * working on simulation for GDH sum proposal
  * finishing calibrations for BCAL for latter part of run
  * helping out with Compton polarimeter in Hall A

      Mark I.

  * CCDB 2.0 Deployment: There is a new version that has long-awaited
    features and perhaps better CPU performance. Just got the automated
    build going and is on to testing.
  * Installing GlueX Software on Fedora: desktop at home is Fedora, so
    developing build of the GlueX software to work locally. Window into
    solving our problem in converting to Python 3 and to a more advanced
    GNU compiler in the future.
  * Review of pi- Delta++ asymmetry paper: reviewing good description of
    the novel asymmetry extraction technique in a previous CLAS paper
  * Neutral Pion Polarizability: with Beni, meeting with Elton on
    BlueJeans to understand his system for event generation, simulation,
    data analysis, and amplitude fitting so we cane help with some of
    the simulations to support the proposal, including looking at
    conditions other than the standard CPP configuration.
  * Software Librarian: Requests for new builds continue to come in.
    Getting built and announced.

      Sergey

  * DAQ controls: replacing ssh scripts with commands over TCP
  * looking at open charm analysis
  * analyzing GEM TRD data
      o looking to apply neural net for PID from TRD
      o algorithm implemented in an FPGA
  * Cody working on F125 with streaming capability, looking at first
    test boards
  * developing LDRD on machine learning on an FPGA
  * learning David Lawrence's stuff, especially data transfer
  * involved in EIC discussions

      Simon

  * work on φ cross section, presented at Workfest
  * developing explicit neutron detection
  * work on straight track fitting for PrimEx-η
  * work on timing for TRD from special runs
  * exploring possible track finding enhancements for J/&psi analysis

      Tim

Areas of work:

  * procedures, specifications for FCAL2
  * procurements, design for CPP with Stephanie Worthington
  * summer SAD scheduling

Ongoing:

  * weekly meetings with technical crew
  * daily chats with same

      Eugene

  * co-convener for EIC working group on calorimetry
      o virtual Temple meeting last week
      o Yellow Report due in September

    Farm Full

  * Beni: we need to stay out of each others way, prioritize use
  * Mark D: Analysis coordinator should prioritize
  * Mark I: Should be discussed at Production and Analysis meeting since
    calibrations, reconstruction, and physics analysis all involved
      o priorities could be enforced by favoring/dis-favoring accounts
        in the batch system, allows non-priority tasks avoid a complete halt

    Spare Cycles

If people feel that they can contribute in new areas due to new
schedules dictated by the stay-at-home regime, please contact Eugene.

    New Positions

  * Alex Austregesilo accepted a staff position, but start will be
    delayed due to the COVID-19 situation.
  * an offer for another staff position has allegedly been sent by HR
  * Tim put in the paperwork to make an offer to an engineering intern
