  Hall D Staff Meeting, September 28, 2020

Present: Alexander Austregesilo, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Mark Dalton, 
Alexandre Deur, Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, Elton Smith, Sascha Somov


    Announcements, Eugene

  * before coming into the Lab:
      o notify the work coordinator
          + email to Mark Stevens and Scot Spiegel
          + make a log entry in HDSAD
          + write a message to halld-sad.jlab.org
      o send Eugene an email reporting negative result of COVID self-test
          + if result is positive, don't come in
  * Tim Whitlatch is off for the week
  * The Lab has made a request to the DOE to increase the on-site
    personnel count from 200[?] to 350.
      o represents 45% of staff
  * time-sheets are due early this time due to the end of the fiscal year
  * performance appraisal cycle starts Oct. 8
  * IUTF achieved 1 nA current at 5 MeV for the first time
      o long-standing plan to use it to test the HD Ice target
  * EIC is moving forward
      o virtual groundbreaking held
          + "attended" by JLab senior management
      o yellow reports due soon
          + how to justify a second interaction point
      o need for 1-11 GeV electron test beams
          + Hall D complex is ideal
          + many issues to resolve
  * Lab budget on a continuing resolution
      o research money has not increased; solution being worked on
  * Hall D budget
      o PRs are in saturating all available funds
      o hopefully all will be obligated this FY or funds may disappear


    KLF, Hovanes

  * Hovanes is coordinator from Hall D side
  * collaboration starting to organize work to build equipment
      o roles being assigned
      o management plan being developed
  * compact photon source (CPS)
      o being developed in Hall C
      o 15 mm gap for photon beam[?]
      o Todd Satogata: focusing not an issue
  * Igor Strakovsky working on the K_L target
  * original proposal: 64 ns bunch separation
      o 128 ns separation: discussions underway
      o bunch charge density an issue
  * jeopardy experiments re-approved
      o GlueX
      o CPP
  * upgrade of CEBAF Center
      o Hall D staff will move to cubicles on second floor expansion
      o construction finishes in 2024


    GDH polarized target, Alexandre

  * meeting two weeks ago with Chris Keith
      o target group occupied with Moller tasks
      o 3 years of work at high priority
      o GDH target will take 3 years to design and build
  * Dustin Kellar of UVA has been contacted
      o he is interested
  * target cost: $600k
      o funding discussion with Eugene to be had soon
  * option: refurbish Hall D FROST target
      o Chris not enthusiastic
      o leak in that device, never fixed
  * cooling power an issue


    CPP, Elton

  * need help with implementation of trigger
      o summer run: test run with random trigger
      o data analyzed to estimate rates
  * next step: implement trigger in hardware
      o requires involvement of Sascha and Fast Electronics
  * run scheduled for 2022
      o but these things take time
  * mechanical design and construction on a good track
      o Tim et al. working on it
