Hall D Staff Meeting, November 23, 2009 Present: George Biallas, Dan Carman, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Bill Crahen, John Domingo, Casey Heck, Chuck Hutton, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Slava Razmyslovich, Elton Smith, Sascha Somov, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin, Glenn Young, Beni Zihlmann Eugene * BIA funding: we were cut by 1 M$, restored at the end of last week, the crisis is past * magnet review last week: George will summarize, very positive, kudos to George for his efforts. * magnet in BIA: may have to change plans in costing magnet effort, need to look at both hardware and software components * Elliott asked about the status of hiring. Eugene: Offers passing through system, preliminary approval granted, 3rd position still up in the air * another bridge position, Mississippi State, was discussed, not this year, next such position will go to Hall D, perhaps FSU * Elton: FIU MOU may not have been signed by FIU, there is a question about whether the ad has been placed * approval for MOU with both NCA&T and UNCW obtained from Alison Lung * Elton and Sascha: the Catholic MOU needs to be pursued. There is a question about whether the goniometer is included or not. * Performance appraisals: going at steady pace * with 3.5 ft of concrete issue and a full retention pond, work has been suspended on the Hall with attendant schedule delay David * working on reconstruction of multi-particle final states * exploring PrimEx eta production issue Tim * landmark decisions on CDC last week: + made choice of straw, aluminum on mylar + crimp pins: use the Hall B ones, tack on their order, supplier will not do copper anymore * has been working on solenoid testing and review preparation Beni * CMU construction contract: CMU asked for extension, contract wording being review by their legal department, will need renegotiation of some points * INT, Seattle: "we do not know much", partial wave analyses conducted thus far not liked by theorists e. g., COMPASS, resonant structures need to be included correctly Mark * project planning: web page for cost report, manpower effort profile, Gantt chart, task summaries for Offline Computing Chuck * Fastrack work for coil tests * BCAL layout of light guides. Elton: how close? Chuck: need to locate PMT's exactly, will meet with Elton on Wed. * working on BCAL modifications Bill * FDC: trying to seal major gas leaks, Casey searching for them * analyzing effect of pressure on liquid helium containment vessel, stress analysis in progress, room temperature analysis for now * George: analysis was done in past on as-designed, not on the as-built, the latter needed * signing drawings on FDC Dan * working up to three layers on full-scale FDC prototype * 300 cc per minute the limit of gas flow right now * getting more hardware to increase flow * working on work-arounds for the leak fixes; design changes will fix these issues for production chamber * hope for 3 layers by next week * move to cosmic ray test set up: schedule not clear, prototype now in clean tent Sascha * working on tagger hall simulation, implementing new geometry, optimization of quad field * looking at simulation of microstrip chambers for use with pair spectrometer * working on PrimEx on background issues * Eugene asked about timescale for final decision on tagger design, Sascha said should be end of this year, he and Richard need to document a few final decisions. * Eugene asked about need for 3-d mode? Sascha and Bill replied that Bill will do that for mechanical (stress analysis) and magnetic field. Simon * working multiparticle reactions: \gamma p\rightarrow\pi(1600)n and \gamma p\rightarrow b_1\pi^-p , b_1\rightarrow\omega\pi^+ , \omega\rightarrow\pi^+\pi-\pi^0 * goal is to measure efficiency Slava * modeling CDC parts * solid model for assemblies * tweaking existing layout as well * decision on how to seal HV cables made, prototype testing will be done * Eugene asked if all connections designed. Slava replied that layout exists which shows how it will be done. Problem with sealing HV cables was last thing addressed. Elton * "two minutes ago some units" arrived, 10 are in the box * info from Carl on "other" arrays is positive, uniformity, pde as expected at room temperature, he still needs to look at dark rate, radiation hardness * John asked about temperature dependence testing. Elton said it could be done * contract with IU for FCAL construction: response from IU recieved, technical evaluation team met to provide advice to Procurement, some comments were made, mainly on documentation needs for readiness review * BCAL fabrication: readiness review three weeks ago or so, prototype was uneven, more problems arose than anticipated, first module has been started, all problems need to be addressed before starting 2nd module. There is already a front-back asymmetry of 1.5 mm, they will rotate by 180 degrees in the press and go on * INT in Seattle: agreed with Beni's assessment. Some groups are starting PWA development, BES/IHEP in China and COMPASS, preparing things for PANDA Casey * working mainly on FDC leak finding/sealing, found some more in cathode in first layer * Dan: Casey also working on some tasks that Mark Stevens had worked, including soldering rigid flex assemblies George See his report for more details. * solenoid review * coil 1 work * pressure system documentation * Chuck has been working on overall assemblies * incidentals on platform being addressed * Josh worked on cryo interface * piping and instrumentation mark-up complete Elliott * Beni was having problem with communication with DAQ, Carl Timmer has fixed it.
