Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, December 7, 2009 Eugene * Two offers went out and were accepted: Lubomir and Yi. They will start in Jan. and Feb. respectively. * We are fighting for a 3rd position. * With recent budget cuts at the level of the lab, Physics Division has been asked to think about cuts of up to 1 M$. * We will have to think about a plan for incorporating new staff. * There is a User Group BOD meeting this Friday + Eugene to give a talk + Will show us show slides on Thursday * Beni: how is the civil construction going? E: started again, they will dig a foot and a half deeper this time Dan * Two layers of prototype have been rebuilt, leak free now * Looked at signals today, so far so good * 3rd layer being prepared for stack + Working on 3rd wire frame; 3 broken wires + Fix planned for today * Should have all three layers together this week * It about the time to start formal negotiations with Indiana for phase 3 winding David * Produced reduced field maps + Generated with Poisson + Pi's and p's run through + Results reported at physics meeting * Working on PrimEx eta background with pythia Beni * Gave talk at Hadron09, at FSU, Tallahassee, Florida + All collaborations seem to be looking for people these days + A good partial wave analysis is not that easy + Talk will be posted on DocDB, with supporting files * Test plan for FDC prototype has been cirulated for comments Mark * Worked with IT Division on plan for updating subversion server * Worked on separating HDDS from src tree: creating directory structure, build system, testing, documentation Bill * Working on Ansys analysis of pressure containment for George * Electomagnetic and structural analysis for tagger magnet next * FDC re-design information for Simon in spreadsheet form * On the leak fix: + Injected epoxy into bolt holes, not done before + Redesign still being studied, current procedure labor intensive, could be more robust + Cut rohacell may expose fissures between cells. Simon * Working on modifications to tracking code discussed at offline meeting * Continuing work on pi(1600) channel * Starting on new geometry work from Bill's specs Fernando * Issued contract to IUCF for Gerard to finish the flash125's, contract through May 1, 2010 + Elton: How do we stay in contact with Gerard to monitor progress? F. will do it * Needs to discuss contract w/ Mitch and Penn for consulting services during production of asics * Should have PR for 40 pre-amp cards soon + have been waiting on parts + cards to come in 1st or 2nd week of January + 10 with new asics, 30 with defective channel model * ---- tests done, both --- and --- samples * Flash250: lots of progress has been made + new FPGA will be used + preliminary redesign will be done by middle to end of January + have board complete by middle of June Slava * Prototype for HV cabling + 24 cables through plastic cover + will gain assembly and adjustment experience + transfer to machine shop this afternoon + next: purchase parts Elton * IU contract for fcal in good shape + Teresa Danforth has completed the package to be sent to DOE for approval, last Thu. it was given to Ross Small for internal review, should be sent soon * CMU RFP issued but... + CMU contract office did not like JLab boilerplate + CMU is modifying Word file; it will be sent to JLab purchasing + concern about intellectual property rights, build to spec contract from us, no research component. + There may be changes in the statement of work. * BCAL contract + Matrix fabrication for module 1 complete, they believe it is fairly straight + plan: machine ends and look through them and judge straightness, then start with next module + a videoconference w/ regina has been scheduled to see where they are with respect to recommendations from Readiness Review, in particular: in contract w/ Ross Machining need to include handling instructions, cleanliness requirements * BCAL read-out ----------elided------------- Tim * Working on schedules, budgets, and manpower for solenoid testing and repair * Updating BCAL drawings * CDC: working on endplates, hopefully done by end of week * Slava has checked CDC feed-through samples, they look good; although, Curtis says they are not * Solenoid test: go until May 2011, manpower has been costed * Beni: PR for straws? T: not out yet, Lamina has the spec * Eugene: electron microscope pictures still to be done? T: thinner aluminum samples not looked at yet Sascha * Working on PrimEx proposal, estimation of background + background that was claimed is reducible, subtractable + Elton: to finish, need background section and systematic errors. We should volunteer to write background section. * Working on tagger hall simulation + Eugene: reminds us that smaller pair spec magnet is still an issue George Coil 1 Flipped the coil over after all instruments were added. No short to ground showed up and nothing was heard clunking around. Tried to insert the coil into the final position within the shield onto the Heim columns. Found that vent tube flanges interfered with the shield. We have solved that using a suggestion by Elliott with a little material bending. Will do another fit as soon as some light damage to the flange knife edges is corrected. We will then cover with the cake pan to do our pressure test and determine that the coil is radially centered. Plan is Remove coil, superinsulate, reinserted and weld the nitrogen and helium fill tubes welded and tested. Bill Crahen did a great job on the Finite element analysis of the joints of between shells and flat end heads on the helium vessel. Lots of fights with ANSYS. We will have to go over the findings Coil 3 Statement of work for substituting the new shield is still delayed. We are getting the rails, rail feet, bolts and keys and Yoke feet from IUCF Coil 2 Coil 2's turn support problem. No progress Test Stand for the G-0 platform is on order. The new vapor cooled current leads in manufacture. Cryo Can vendor pick in DOE's hands. We are continuing working on the small modifications to the cryo can to be given to the vendor just after placement: weld configurations, shift in the feet, use of dog clamp flange to capture the bellows from the chimney, Define the wire harnesses and plugs to be preplaced into the insulating volume. Add an additional tube to convey the coil pressure at the bottom of the coil to the pilot operated relief valve. Substitution of of the Hall A re-design of the Valve positioners. We will introduce these with the negotiations to speed up the contract. Chuck Hutton's overall assembly drawing for the test is on the back burner now. but the schedule is being worked under Tim's direction. We now have have many incidentals like Platform structural enhancement, can cleats, foot plates and interface plates on the personnel stands, incidental personnel scaffolding, U-Tube supports, added shims to the cryo can feet/cleat interface and coil lead splice detail in the chimney. Josh Ballard continues work on the relief systems for both helium and insulating vacuum. He also composed the narrative for cool down and warm up, necessary for the controls programming. Scott Spiegel continues work on the spreadsheet based wiring and harness list, marking up the controls schematic drawings while he is doing it to respond to nomenclature definition and new instruments, signal readers and processors we are substituting or adding. Elliott * Online meeting tomorrow + William Gu on TI, TD boards + discussion on redundant plc's * solenoid: + new schedule has been drawn up + started with 1 rs232 channel, now up to a dozen; plan to use AB PointIO module, $250/channel + Scott and Mark Stevens want to put patch panel on control racks, a new item, $3k + Armen Stepanyan will start working with us in thursday on control racks + What about the door? No decision yet. * Final official drawings are needed for Wed. meeting with guy doing programming, aka Mark Wissmann * Strategy for hardware in Hall C based on radiation damage; we might be able to make different choices * Mark stevens thinks we should move dump resister to where the flags are.
