Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, March 29, 2010 Present: Fernando Barbosa, Dan Carman, Bill Crahen, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Jim Fochtman, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Sascha Somov, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin, Glenn Young, Beni Zihlmann Eugene * budget: some reserves left in BIA, trying to get more manpower on software side, can hire a visitor for 1/2 a year, Dmitry a candidate * Tim: intoduces Jim Fochtman, working on cryogenic lines (and stuff) * training: please complete your annual standards of conduct training Sascha * done with simulation of FDC and TOF, writing it up * going back to tagger magnet, will check all maps and give feedback to Bill on deflections and position of focal plane Beni * change requests in preparation, working with Glenn, now that CDC contract signed * straws: looking at ways to inspect optically, perhaps with a bore scope * FDC: will finish HV test, then look at weird-signal wires and fix their behavior * set-up a mini read-out system for taking data with cosmics, 16 wires 32 strips * Eugene: at off-site assembly location, fast ethernet needed? Beni: no, data acquired to local files and later copied * Fernando: document from atlas transition radiation tracker people, detials optical checking, they shine light down tube and take pictures. Beni: concern for us is with quality of surface, not so much straightness of straws. Mark * bug in dependencies in makefile scheme fixed * looking at task tracking software for offline working group * set-up vme crate as EPICS IOC in cubicle * scripts and builds switched to use JANA 0.6.1 * documentation ideas outlined, discussion started at offline meeting * calibration versioning system implemented, documented, discussed at offline meting * sim-recon directory switch done * continued work on MMI fitter, FDC cathodes and their contribution to chi-squared. Fernando * receiving feedback on cables and racks in preparation for purchase * there was a meeting on pre-amp, F. presented worst of pre-amp cards with its variation on threshold, this variation is within a chip, does not depend on board, range of variation is within 1.5 fC (11 ns peaking time) * on CDC: have instrumentation for 24 channels to do tracking on a group of channels * cables are done * PC boards for FDC: had meeting with Lubomir and Kim Shinault, plan to get all feedback in two weeks and finish design * BCAL issues being worked on * Bill: FDC will be opened again, might want help looking at signals * Beni: pre-amp, post-amp, discriminator system, 50 ns deadtime seen, discriminator set to 20 ns width. Fernando: it is not the pre-amp Eugene: is there a way to look a several signals at same time? Fernando: there is another $2,500 probe out there, will try to locate it Elliott * Dave Heddle has hired a summer student to work on the Hall D event display * rootspy project wrapping up in a few weeks * Tunneling problem with cmsg solved * DANA-EVIO conversion: final touches on associated objects being done, very close to done * coil test: physical construction of racks completed, time to do the wiring, Scott is finishing drawings, then wiring will start in earnest, using Qweak area, coil 2 is there * safety review: writing assignments and subject matter experts identified. Tim leading the effort, OSP and conduct of operations will be reviewed together * modules for read-out: web stuff working, test page up on web, Yi working on HMI * Eugene: time scale for wiring? Elliott: 12 man-weeks, Tim: Chris Cuevas is looking into hiring someone, Armen will help as well * Eugene asked about cables from solenoid to racks. Elliott: still to be done, inter-rack wiring the more complex task Bill * working on tagger structural analysis, initial run done, now repeating * mechanical mock-up of new fdc components with solid g10 design almost ready, wireboard was done over weekend, ready to put together * tomorrow will meet with Roger Flood to finalize cathode foils * Eugene: widen connector for flex board? Bill: space is tight Tim * manpower: + getting Scott help with wiring + position for fdc construction coordinator about to be posted + two tech positions: interviewing, for solenoid testing + put out a critial hire for TE3, another "crew chief" + another engineer 1 position has been written and waiting for signatures, mechanical * BCAL readout mechanical drawings being worked on by Chuck Hutton * CDC test samples, mechanical inserts being tested * coil 1 being closed up, small leak still there, cold shock next * cutting open coil 2 * coil 3 purchase requisition written, PO to be issued soon, got quotes from IUCO * looking for space for fdc fabrication off-site * Eugene: outside space for coil work? Tim: there is space on mezzanine in Test Lab for intermediate storage * Eugene: meeting to discuss cryo supply requirements over next decade, any report? Tim: committee formed, charged with collecting requests lab-wide. We will need to fill out a form, in a month another meeting, CHL may be stressed when all requests are accounted for. Jim * working on cryogenic transfer line design, 70% complete Yi * SiPM test in Hall A: + setup finished, main program to do test finished + there is capability to read epics variables into labview system + during beam tuning, some components rebooted, shielding has been added + Hall A continuing tests, production starts next week + two SiPM's will be under test, one from each of two companies * HMI programming: computer set up underway Lubomir * Lubomir and the entire group gave a round of applause and thanks to Dan for an outstanding job bringing the FDC project from inception to its current advanced stage. * Beni started testing inside the tent with a source, it would be convenient to do this at the off-site construction space as well. Radcon will have to be consulted. * More space is needed * There is problem with wrinkle in one of the ground planes, Bill is studying it. * Fernando is checking final cathode PCB design * Sascha presented a rate study, settling on 1.3 cm radius for cathode strips, with a sensitive radius of 2.3 cm defined by the deadened region of the wires. * There will be another FDC following this one to discuss wire winding at IUCO. Simon * improvements to FDC reconstruction code: + FDC cathode pointer added + inefficiency for associating wire with strips found, not handling case where maximum at edge of cluster, now fixed * continuing work on Kalman filter, looking at adaptive step size, based on material density and field gradient * reviewing validity of material map David * looking at full event reconstruction + Elton found protons systematically low, lead to examination of energy loss for ALT1 fitter + found steps too big sometimes + we take ROOT geometry and use Monte Carlo sampling for material map + need to add piece to know when a boundary is being approached, should be done in a week or so * in time-of-flight detector reconstruction: moving smearing to mcsmear, need to allow possibility of keeping smeared and unsmeared at the same time, complicated by smearing being done on two places previously * issue with split-offs, i. e., extra photons being reconstructed from a single photon, problem coupled with identity of shower as hadronic or electromagnetic concentrating on BCAL * open house: + submitted list of volunteers, with t-shirt sizes + map of tent drawn up + not with 12 GeV group anymore, we will be out near the FEL + meeting with Bill Briesel to talk about set-up + still mulling ideas on what to show on the "movie" screen + grabbing detector group left-overs, try to show cosmics on oscilliscope __________________________________________________________________ recorded by [30]Marki 17:58, 29 March 2010 (EDT) Retrieved from "http://www.jlab.org/Hall-D/software/wiki/index.php/Private:Hall_D_ Staff_Meeting%2C_March_29%2C_2010"
