The JLab analysis cluster is upgrading entirely to CentOS 5.3 64-bit
computing by the end of 2010; all 32-bit Fedora systems are at end-of-
life and will be completely decommissioned in the coming months. Newer
nodes have a total of 5 times the capacity of the old: the new
processors are twice as fast, and run 12 jobs instead of 5 like most of
the 32-bit nodes. The nodes are also more energy efficient.
Interactive user systems, available via the 'ifarml64' alias, include
ifarml6 and ifarml1. 64-bit batch nodes include 50 Nehalem systems with
24GB RAM and 8 cores with hyperthreading on, plus a small number of AMD
8-core systems with 8GB RAM.
Use the OS: linux64 tag to access these nodes. 32-bit codes may be run
on the 64-bit systems by setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH appropriately.
Additionally, multi-threaded jobs are now supported, using the tag CPU:
x, where x is the number of cores requested. These jobs will likely
need to increase their memory request over the default setting, using
the MEMORY: xxx tag.
The first group of farm nodes scheduled for removal will be by the end
of FY10 in September. An FY11 purchase of compute nodes is anticipated
in the fall before the final nodes are removed. These nodes will have
another 2 times in throughput, thus ~10 times better throughput than
most of the 32-bit nodes.
Currently there are almost 700 job slots in the 64-bit queue, with less
than 500 in the 32-bit queue. Cluster usage graphs are available at
http://scicomp.jlab.org/farm/stat/job.faces .
