Dear All—

In mid-June 2016, there will be a planning meeting for the
Office of Nuclear Physics, joint with the Office of Advanced
Scientific Computing Research on computing in the exascale era.

There are 5 sub-panels—Hot QCD, Cold QCD, Nuclear
Astro-Physics, Nuclear Structure and Experimental Nuclear
Physics. Each sub panel has roughly ten people. The experimental
sub panel has four co-leads of which I am one.

The experimental sub-panel will cover considerable ground. As a
note esp. for Yves—Accelerator modeling is ‘experimental’ for
the purposes of this exercise. While the ASCR perspective is
long range planning towards exascale class machines and the
traditional applications (hence the focus on theory), NP would
like broader consideration including some information on local
resources to support the current and future program and issues
that could be broadly classified as the software ecosystem, from
now until 2030 and finally, what we expect in terms of
evolution—after all, if there are exascale class systems in 2025
at the leadership classes facilities, there will be petascale
class local resources, which could have some fundamental
implications.

Drafts of white papers are due on May 13 so we will have a
meeting during the week of April 25 to get the formal
requirements gathering started. With our recent workshop, we do
have a bit of a head start. The meeting is open to anyone who is
interested, so please forward and inform as needed especially to
users.

Included on the Experimental SubPanel is Richard Jones who will
be broadly covering issues associated with detector simulations
and Graham Heyes who will covering DAQ/trigger. Others are
involved from the Theory side and are copied.

Thanks, Amber
