Dear Colleagues,

I submitted a first draft for the document to DocDB:

https://halldweb.jlab.org/doc-private/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=6314

I managed to stay below the 5 page limit by moving a few items to
the appendix. Thanks to everybody who contributed to the text so
far.

For completeness, you will find the announcement and the charge
for the Computing Review in DocDB as well. I may edit the document
tomorrow to address some of the charges and/or recommendations
from the last review more explicitly.

Any corrections and suggestions are highly appreciated. The
document will be made available to the reviewers tomorrow evening,
even though further edits are still allowed.

Best regards,

Alex

Dear Colleagues,

JLab is undergoing another Computing Review and Hall D is one
of the subjects of the review. The meeting is scheduled for
February 1-2, 2024.

As computing coordinator for Hall D, I am expected to present
a 20+10 min overview talk to address the charges. In addition,
we should provide a short "Pre-Review Handout" one week in
advance (Jan 26) with additional context and details. The
announcement asks for "<5 pages", but I doubt this will be
possible given the multitude of activities.

I started a wiki page to coordinate our contribution:

https://halldweb.jlab.org/wiki/index.php/Software_and_Computing_Review_7

This page has links to charge and announcement, which have
more details about the requirements. It also includes links to
the previous computing reviews and their recommendations.

I used the handout for the last review in 2021 as a basis for
the new draft, where I identified possible co-authors for the
different sections:

Online skim system (Sergey)

Calibration (Sean)

Reconstruction (Igal)

Analysis (Alex)

Simulation (Peter)

AI/ML (Naomi)

GPU (Alex)

Since the document is already much too long, the assignment
for the authors is mainly to update the existing info and to
remove redundant or outdated information.

Please have a look and feel free to send me your thoughts. I
will schedule a meeting with the authors towards the end of
next week to discuss a consistent message.

In case the document is missing any new developments and you
would like to contribute as an author, please come forward.

Have a great weekend,

Alex
