Changes were made to the configuration of the Firefox web browser on computers gluon01-gluon05 to make them more usable.
1. The .mozilla home directory was renamed to mozilla.old and a link made to a new directory /tmp/mozilla_hdops . The new directory resides on the local disk rather than the networked mounted gluonfs1. This means that the profiles, bookmarks, cache, etc... for all of these gluons are now decoupled. This addresses the problem of firefox refusing to open because "the profile is already in use". One cost is that adding new bookmarks will not propagate to all computers now. This issue may be addressed in the future. This also effectively removed all existing profiles, cookies, cache. These are preseved for now in the mozilla.old directory in case they need to be accessed for some reason. However, this directory will be deleted in a couple of weeks so please contact me if you have a good reason for it to stay around longer.
2. Use of a proxy server was configured. This allows the web browsers to browse the entire internet rather than being restricted only to JLab servers. The proxy server used was jprox.jlab.org port 8082
3. The Google Chrome web browser was installed on gluon01. (Recall that gluon01 is the only one of the five computers running RHEL7. The rest are running RHEL6. and have dependency issues with the RPM). This was also configured to use the proxy server.
