[Halld-online] [New Logentry] gluon home disk filled -- RESOLVED

Earlier today the home directory on gluonfs1 filled. It is a 3TB disk and many DAQ related scripts and files are stored there in the hdops home directory. Thus, it is critical to DAQ operations.

Several people removed large files to free up space and Paul L. added 500GB to the disk to allow some extra room. The disk continued to fill.

It turns out there was a file ~hdops/Desktop/junk.jpeg that was over 2.1TB and still being written to. Some investigative work by Sergey identified the process writing to it as firefox running on gluon02. I went to the counting house and found that a tab in the one firefox window open on gluon02 was showing one of the cameras in the hall. (See first screencap below.) When I tried to close this, the dialog shown in the second image came up indicating that the (infinite) video stream was being downloaded. Closing the window caused the junk.jpeg file to disappear. It is worth noting that nothing obvious in the firefox window indicated that the download was ongoing.

Upon reflection, I recall trying to save a screenshot of that image since it showed the location and mounting of the muon chamber and scintillator paddles. I believe I did this use a right-click menu thinking it would save the jpeg as a single frame. It must have been saving it as a JPEG compressed video stream the whole time. Mea culpa. Perhaps this can serve as a lessons learned for others.
