Hi Everyone -

first, to the best of our knowledge, the run plan in the TDR is correct. We

hope to finish commissioning this fall and then get our engineering run in

the early spring of 16 ( I would hope that we can get physics out of both

of these). Then physics officially starts late 2016.

As for the intro, I think your proposal to tighten it up is good. All I did in

editing the opening was to get the dates correct and remove the PAC specific

parts. There, we obviously had to both explain the physics and justify that

the DIRC could do it..

Hi all,

I went thru the TDR draft today and I think it needs a lot of work. First my major comments. I want to discuss these before doing the editing.

Sec 1 and 2: Introduction & Motivation and Baseline Detector

I think this is way too long and "indirect" for a TDR. The LHC TDR's I've worked on are structured so that Sec I is a short (1 page or so) overview of the experiment and running conditions + timeline. Then Sec 2 is called "Requirements" and lays out what
is needed from the system to achieve the physics goals. There is never any "justification" of the physics, as that is not the purpose of the TDR.

I propose that Sec 1 becomes something like the current Sec 1 intro paragraph + Sec 1 B intro paragraph + Table II (timeline) + Sec 2 B (expected run plan). The following can be completely removed: Sec 1 A, Sec 1 B subsecs 1 and 2.

Then Sec 2 should be "Requirements" and should contain a much shorter baseline detector overview + where FDIRC will be placed + just the Cherenkov angle resolution required over what kinematic space to satisfy the physics needs. We can reference the PAC42
proposal for where these needs are coming from.

Here we should also move the tracking affect on the resolution. Move the EM background and affect on the FCAL.

Sec 3: FDIRC for GlueX

I think there should be Sec 3 "Design Overview", then Sec 4 "Photon Detection & Readout", then Sec 5 "Focusing Box" (which will include the mirrors).

Sec 4:

Most of this Sec can go. We don't need to show all of this again. The only thing we need is to say that we need sigma_theta_C < 2.5 mrad and this can go in Sec 2. So I don't see a need for the "performance" stuff in this sec. At most, we should pick one
channel and show baseline vs base + FDIRC.

The relevant info here is how the tracking resolution affects the Cherenkov angle resolution and it is here that we introduce the resolution terms (Table VII). Table VII + discussion must be moved to Sec 3.

There's also the EM background here, and the affect on the FCAL. These can be moved to Sec 2.

Sec V A:

This is totally out of date.

Sec VI:

Budget needs some work.

"Project Management" is totally missing, along with milestones, etc. This will take some thought and we can edit this section independently of the rest for the most part.

Questions:

* Is the "expected run plan" up-to-date? Specifically we say more commissioning in late 2015/early 2016 and first phys in late 2016. Are these current?

* Matt, is Sec III C (Integration) up to date? It still discusses vertical alignment as default, etc. I assume it's out of date.

* Matt, is Sec V B (Transportation) up to date? It doesn't mention any of your recent work.

* Etc. I had some more questions but I left my notes in my office today.

Thoughts? Let's try and hash this out, then I can edit the document to match.

Cheers,
