It would be nice to know what the loss mechanisms are, e. g., bulk 
attenuation, imperfect reflections, and or escape.

Also one check to build confidence is to make the light guide design 
extreme to see if performance worsens in an expected way, e. g., very 
long guides, or very sharp bend angles. (You have have done this already.)
