Going back to the proto I made (the same as the pics you linked) and
measuring, the bend takes almost a full cm from
The edge of the board. Unless a different approach is used, I would 
allow at
least 8mm for the bend. Like you said,
Curtis, three wire diameters.

The connector is almost 9mm wide so, 4.5+3+2+6+8=23.5 x 2 = 4.7cm full 
width
which is still considerably
Thinner than the original prototype.
