Maybe they did, but maybe the drillbits wore down and were replaced at
(irregular) intervals.  As the reaming progressed, starting around the
outermost row and then moving towards the center, we found that the
reaming was at first difficult, and then got progressively easier until it
became suddenly harder again, repeatedly, but with no obvious regular
interval.  Anyway, the reaming is around 2/3 complete now.
