Folks,
Yesterday at the Offline Software meeting we decided to switch from
Subversion to Git for source code version control for hdds and
sim-recon. There was a consensus among those at the meeting in favor of
the change. I outlined a plan for making the switch which I am
reproducing below. Also a copy of my talk is on the DocDB:
http://argus.phys.uregina.ca/cgi-bin/public/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=2757
It is the third of the three talks there.
*Important*: we plan to make the switch at 5 pm, Wednesday, July 15.
Many of us have checked out versions of hdds and sim-recon in our
personal directories. If you have changes that exist only in personal
directories, they will not make the transition to Git (at least not
easily) unless they are checked into our Subversion repository before we
make the switch. Please allow yourself some time between now and
Wednesday to look over your directories and decide which changes should
be checked-in and which can be discarded.
Let me emphasize that the switch is only for hdds and sim-recon; nothing
special will be done with the Subversion repository and other
packages/directories will be unaffected by the change. Also note that
hdds and sim-recon themselves will live on as they are under Subversion.
These two will just slowly go out of date and should not be used for new
check-outs.
Here is the switch-over procedure:
1. Comment: Only HDDS and sim-recon will be converted.
2. Comment: Having two authoritative repositories is a contradiction in
terms.
3. Schedule switch-over for COB, Wed., July 15.
4. Between now and then, people should check in changes to the
Subversion repository.
5. Continue to get experience using practice repositories.
6. Do final conversion from Subversion to Git overnight, Wed. to Thu.
Practice repositories will be deleted.
7. Open for business for Git after all-clear announcement Thursday
morning.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

P. S. Sent this to both halld and halld-offline. Sorry for the duplicate
messages. I don't want to miss anyone.
