<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">When Chip Watson retired early last month the lab had need for a new head of Scientific Computing. I applied for the position and yesterday was my first day in the new role. For me personally not a huge change
since I was already doing much of the work as Chip transitioned towards retirement. Previously the Scientific Computing group had a focus that was weighted towards theory computing. My stepping into the department leader role partly rebalances that towards
experimental nuclear physics. One thing that we have been considering for many years now was consolidating some of the software related functions into one group. With the reorganization of scientific computing this has been realized.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">David’s has described the mission of his new group. The current group members are:<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">As you can see, four members are physicists who worked extensively on software as members of the physics division. I think this group is composed of talented people who can be a useful resource for the science
program at the lab. Putting them together in the same group will hopefully provide an environment out of which many good things will come. Over the coming days and weeks we will be looking at existing commitments and refining the role of the group. If you
