Clarifying this: I expect some electrons that miss the ECal proper hit the vacuum chamber and shower into the next row and deposit enough energy there to make a cluster, especially if all of that energy goes into one crystal.  This would create such structure.

So, maybe a good question to ask next would be about how carefully the MC model of the ECal vacuum chamber has been checked against what was actually built in the end?
