Dear HPS,
HPS was incredibly fortunate to be given an extra month of weekend running. This gives HPS a real shot at a significant physics result from the Spring 2016 running. It is now up to us all to staff the shifts for this running, and to do so expeditiously so travel plans can be made.
HPS shift policy states that our shift coordinator, Bryan McKinnon, randomly assigns shifts to HPS collaborating institutions and they in turn have the responsibility of assigning their personnel to those shifts, or bartering with other institutions to effect workable trades which fill those shifts. The responsibility for filling the assigned time, one way or another, resides with the institutional representatives.
Institutional representatives, please see that your institution's shifts are filled as soon as possible.
Please do not pass this responsibility on to Bryan. It's not his job. It's yours.
As Bryan has written, the shifts for the last two weekends have been assigned according to how many shifts each institution has taken during the present run. They were announced three or four weeks before the shifts are actually scheduled, which is far from our stated ideal, but considered to be workable and the best we can do given the last minute nature of our extension. Everyone should note that for reasons outside our control --dealing with last minute scheduling changes, weekend-only running, and machine problems-- the HPS "locals" have borne the burden of staffing many HPS shifts. They have also been heavily called upon to staff the first two weeks of shifts in April. Any trades to be made should not involve JLAB locals.
On behalf of the HPS EC,
John
EC Chair
