Hi everyone,
An interesting item from the theorists/phenomenologists.

Subject: Physics Today article on Hidden Sectors and Long-Lived Particles on the arXiv
Dear fellow LHC-LLP enthusiasts,
Raman Sundrum and I wrote a general physics level overview article about theories with hidden sectors, how they could explain fundamental mysteries like the Hierarchy Problem, Baryogenesis or Dark Matter, and how they motivate searches for long-lived particles at the Large Hadron Collider and elsewhere. We also explain how the search for neutral particles with very long lifetimes requires an external detector, like our recent MATHUSLA proposal for the HL-LHC.
This is intended for publication in Physics Today, but to make it available sooner, we got permission from the editor to upload the draft to the arxiv.
https://arxiv.org/abs/1702.02524
We hope that this article can be read by anyone with a physics background, allowing them to understand the big picture of why hidden sectors and long-lived particles are highly motivated and important to search for at colliders.
It should also be an easy read for physicists working in any area of high energy theory or experiment, allowing them to get a quick overview of the subject.
Of course, the format of such an article (and the small number of allowed references) means we cannot go over everything or cite everyone. Nevertheless, it was our hope to communicate the right “moral” of the story, and that this will be useful.
cheers,
David
