Lustre Fixes Planned for Tuesday, March 15

On Tuesday March 15, as part of monthly planned maintenance, software fixes for Lustre on the farm will be applied and systems will be restarted. This work addresses bugs that impacted system uptime in recent months. The fixes will be applied to servers over the course of the day resulting in brief interruptions to file access when the affected servers restart.

The affected Lustre filesystems on the farm are /cache and /volatile. Here are some reminders about the data retention and backup policies for these areas:

  * /cache holds files that are automatically written to tape. Note that files smaller than 1MB are not written to tape to avoid performance problems with the tape system. Small files with important data should be bundled and written to tape periodically using tar or by forcing them to tape with the "jcache put filepath" command.

  * /volatile is intended for short term storage of data. This area is automatically managed to maintain space on a group quota basis. The data in /volatile is not backed up and is subject to automatic deletion.
  *
  * The /work filesystems are not part of Lustre and are not part of this maintenance activity. Like /volatile, /work areas are not backed up. The jput command can be used to store files on tape.
