Good afternoon JLab Colleagues –

The first six months of the year has flown by fast. I hope you’ve enjoyed your summer.

In August, we highlight our Procurement Team/Supplier Diversity efforts and ask that you all save the date for our upcoming Demographic Focus Groups. You can view the article about the Procurement Team, their org chart, DFGM calendar and other holidays around the world, additional resources and all things DEI here – DEI Website<https://www.jlab.org/human_resources/diversity/culture>.

JLAB’S PROCUREMENT TEAM/HIGHLIGHT ON SUPPLIER DIVERSITY

[cid:image001.jpg at 01D8B304.D41051B0]The Procurement Office is a business support group with responsibility for procuring equipment, products and services to support the laboratory mission. Our purchasing system is approved by DOE and requires adherence to prime contract policies and procedures. The Procurement Team supports DOE socioeconomic/diversity goals by actively seeking to make awards to qualified small businesses. The team consistently meets or exceeds the mandated goals of 49% for small business awards, as well as the established goals for small disadvantaged firms and women-owned small business concerns. The team is also consistently recognized for our sustainability efforts. Our recent 5th GreenBuy award from DOE resulted in the lab earning a Superior Award (reserved for facilities achieving gold-level status for at least five years).

SAVE-THE-DATE:  JLAB’S DEMOGRAPHIC FOCUS GROUPS

[https://mcusercontent.com/1de9c43e6d5e45ff0ecd664cd/images/02590a04-77b8-05b7-1f02-abf54cec72dd.jpg]Demographic focus group meetings are back next month! The purpose of these meetings is to provide a safe space for discussion and promote a strong culture of diversity, inclusion and equity at the lab. Each focus group was created to address demographics that reported a lower sense of belonging in the 2020 Inclusion Survey. The meeting will help us shape our 2023 Inclusion Survey, as well as help us continue to improve in this area.

A big thank you to Thia Keppel for accepting our invitation to be the leadership sponsor for our Gender Group. Welcome Thia!

All meetings are virtual with the exception of the Role/Techs/AO/ESM (Technical Staff) meeting, which will be held on-site at the Test Lab (Bldg. 58), Rm. 1227. All staff and Users are welcome to attend.

Spotlight:  JLAB’S MOTHER’S/WELLNESS ROOMS

[cid:image007.jpg at 01D8B2FD.39C98DD0]To support a more positive, relaxing environment for the lab community and new mothers at the lab, there are now two dedicated wellness/mother’s rooms available for use. Each room has a refrigerator, seating and a nearby sink.

  *   CEBAF Center (Bldg. 12) Room F333
  * Accelerator Maintenance Support Building (Bldg. 87) Room 113

When space is not in use by a new mother, the room is available for anyone to take a quick breather and relax. The lock on the door handle will indicate when the room is in use. In the case of emergency, there is a break glass case containing a key outside the door.

Should you have any questions, contact Corry Smith, CRE Project Engineer at 757.269.7700 or via email at csmith at jlab.org<mailto:csmith at jlab.org>.

The above information was originally shared in June 8th’s JLab Weekly. More Mother’s/Wellness Rooms (Bldg. 28, Room 7A and Bldg. 55, Room 2519) are planned to be ready this month. When ready, communication will be shared through the weekly briefs.

Women’s Equality Day – August 26th
[See the source image]In an attempt to commemorate women gaining the right to vote, Congress declared August 26th to be Women's Equality Day. Although not an official holiday, the United States has marked Women's Equality Day each year since 1971. According to the National Women's History Alliance, Rep. Bella Abzug spearheaded legislation in 1971 that would see Congress designate August 26th as Women's Equality Day to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment. Although the 19th Amendment was first introduced in 1878, it was not added to the Constitution until August 18th 1920, a full 42 years after its initial introduction. According to the Constitution Center, it was later made an official part of the Constitution on August 26th when then-U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation certifying the amendment. This date of certification is the date Women's Equality Day commemorates.

The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality. The same year Women's Equality Day was officially recognized by Congress, on Aug. 26, 50,000 women marched in New York City for the Women's Strike For Equality March, according to TIME. The march was the brainchild of Betty Friedan, according to TIME, who wanted to show the American media the power of second-wave feminism. Women couldn't vote until the 19th Amendment was passed, but nothing technically prevented them from running for office. So, as noted by Heavy, they did. Her Hat Was In The Ring, a database by Dr. Wendy E. Chmielewski, Dr. Jill Norgren and Dr. Kristen Gwinn-Becker, calculated the number of women who ran for political office before 1920.
Did you know? 3,586 women ran in 4,927 campaigns before women got the right to vote.
