Good morning JLab Colleagues -

I hope you are all enjoying the summer and taking some time off to recharge and spend time with your family and friends.

In July, we highlight our DEI Council, Demographic Focus Groups and National Disability Independence Day. Information about these groups were shared in the JLab Weekly, but in case you missed it, see below. You can view more information about these groups, other holidays around the world, additional resources and all things DEI here - DEI Website<https://www.jlab.org/human_resources/diversity/culture>. Click the gray DEI Resources & FAQ's tab for additional information on these celebrations.

JLAB'S DEI COUNCIL

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council is chartered by the director of the laboratory and is the primary body responsible for advising on all subjects related to DEI. JLab's DEI Council is composed of two senior leader co-chairs, a scientific User community ambassador and division ambassadors who are nominated by their respective division leaders. The DEI Council is diverse in gender, race/ethnicity, disability, veteran status, generation, sexual orientation, role and tenure. Council ambassadors serve for two-year renewable terms. They meet monthly with a focus towards achieving objectives and implementing initiatives to ensure an inclusive workplace.

JLAB'S DEMOGRAPHIC FOCUS GROUPS

Early in 2021, the lab initiated a series of focus groups as part of our commitment to become a more diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone has a voice and can contribute fully. The purpose of these focus groups is to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges experienced by our staff and to identify ways to eliminate barriers and limiting behaviors. Members of the lab's senior leadership team serve as sponsors to facilitate meetings, capture participant perspectives and action recommendations, and report findings to the DEI Council. Staff and Users are invited to participate and provide feedback in the biannual focus group sessions. The next sessions are planned to begin in September, stay tuned for the dates on the DEI Website or the JLab Weekly.

NATIONAL DISABILITY INDEPENDENCE DAY - JULY 26TH

National Disability Independence Day is celebrated every year on July 26. It commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disability Act (A.D.A.) in 1990. This civil rights law criminalizes any kind of discrimination against individuals with disabilities and assures them full participation in the community, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. The Americans with Disability Act covers the following areas: public accommodation, employment, transportation, and state and local government services. A.D.A. is a life-changing act for many people. Today, one in four Americans with a disability can access and participate better in their workplaces and general communities. For more information, click here<https://nationaltoday.com/national-disability-independence-day/>.
