Greetings all,
David floated the idea of doing this through an LDRD proposal. Stuart just made the call for 2021 proposals. I wanted to highilight a couple bullets from Stuart's email:

  *   Addressing R&D issues relevant for new research directions using existing lab facilities.
  *   Advancing high performance computing, including machine learning techniques, scientific data management, scientific visualization

The deadline for submitting your preliminary proposal to the program manager<mailto:harwood at jlab.org>  is April 30. The deadline for full proposals is May 31.

SUBJECT: Call for Proposals for LDRD Funding in Fiscal Year 2021
Dear colleagues,

Jefferson Lab continues its commitment to innovative research with a call for proposals for funding in Fiscal Year 2021 (Oct. 2020 through Sept. 2021) under the Laboratory Directed Research & Development Program. The LDRD is an important element in Jefferson Lab’s strategic plan and provides the opportunity for exploration of emerging scientific challenges both within and beyond our core mission.

Creative, high-impact initiatives across a broad range of topics are of interest. Of particular interest this year are efforts in the following areas:

  *   Addressing R&D issues relevant for new research directions using existing lab facilities.
  *   Advancing high performance computing, including machine learning techniques, scientific data management, scientific visualization and heterogeneous architectures.
  *   Development of technologies for i) medical and biological imaging and ii) the application of particle beams.
  *   For FY2021, Quantum Information Science (including quantum computing and quantum sensing devices) is of special interest. Proposals for this topic will receive special attention and may be separated into an independent evaluation process with a targeted budget.

If you are a Jefferson Science Associates employee with an exciting idea for exploring a cutting-edge theory or technology, LDRD may be a great opportunity for you to advance your idea.
