[Internalcommsmodeling] LDRD for this?

David,
Thanks for the info (the big questions). For the others in the group that are unaware; I believe David is currently overseeing 1 or 2 LDRD projects.

I can say with a great deal of confidence that I won't be doing the work. Like most, I don't have the time to do it with my existing (and ever growing) tasks in my regular "day job". Beyond that, I've already brought this up to my supervisor (CC'd on this email) who echoed the same sentiment.

David, is it possible that if the communications team is interested in pursuing something like this ("hiring someone"), that they can move forward with the proposal (and budget analyst talks), and I could just serve as technical POC. I think you mentioned there's a name for such a person as it relates to an LDRD?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I think this could be an interesting LDRD. The first big questions you need to answer are:

Who will do the work? If it is primarily you, then you will need to ask for funding to pay for the fraction of your salary for the time you expect to spend on it. You will also need to make sure your supervisor and division head are OK with you working that much less on your regular “day job”. LDRD won’t fund things that are considered part of your regular duties.

You may also ask for money to hire someone to work on this. You would them supervise them. Expect it to take some time to hire them though so you’ll probably get 9 months at best during the first year.

Once you come up with a budget, you’ll need to get your Budget Analyst involved since they will add in all of the overhead. The B.A. probably doesn’t need to be involved for the preliminary proposal since you’ll have a month to get that done before the final proposal is due.

I’m happy to help where I can. Keep me in the loop on any meetings.

Regards,
-David

	Greetings all,
David floated the idea of doing this through an LDRD proposal. Stuart just made the call for 2021 proposals. I wanted to highilight a couple bullets from Stuart's email:

	*	Addressing R&D issues relevant for new research directions using existing lab facilities.
	*	Advancing high performance computing, including machine learning techniques, scientific data management, scientific visualization

The deadline for submitting your preliminary proposal to the program manager <mailto:harwood at jlab.org> is April 30. The deadline for full proposals is May 31.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

April 2, 2020
SUBJECT: Call for Proposals for LDRD Funding in Fiscal Year 2021
Dear colleagues,

Jefferson Lab continues its commitment to innovative research with a call for proposals for funding in Fiscal Year 2021 (Oct. 2020 through Sept. 2021) under the Laboratory Directed Research & Development Program. The LDRD is an important element in Jefferson Lab’s strategic plan and provides the opportunity for exploration of emerging scientific challenges both within and beyond our core mission.

Creative, high-impact initiatives across a broad range of topics are of interest. Of particular interest this year are efforts in the following areas:

*	Addressing R&D issues relevant for new research directions using existing lab facilities.
*	Advancing high performance computing, including machine learning techniques, scientific data management, scientific visualization and heterogeneous architectures.
*	Development of technologies for i) medical and biological imaging and ii) the application of particle beams.
*	For FY2021, Quantum Information Science (including quantum computing and quantum sensing devices) is of special interest. Proposals for this topic will receive special attention and may be separated into an independent evaluation process with a targeted budget.

If you are a Jefferson Science Associates employee with an exciting idea for exploring a cutting-edge theory or technology, LDRD may be a great opportunity for you to advance your idea.

New projects must submit a Preliminary Proposal. The deadline for submitting your preliminary proposal to the program manager <mailto:harwood at jlab.org> is April 30. The deadline for full proposals is May 31.

Detailed information about Jefferson Lab’s LDRD program and how to seek funding for your idea can be found at LDRD at Jefferson Lab <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__jlab.us11.list-2Dmanage.com_track_click-3Fu-3D1de9c43e6d5e45ff0ecd664cd-26id-3De7fc0b26de-26e-3Df33bde3e6e&d=DwMFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=Zaocn52uRd3MfDLRuOq46g&m=L6mY2Q2S7h-0NtLIHcqupXz3prex71FL4n51XQsrOqM&s=CB4hdqodyc5dJMOSjQLrnxAbHdfpcFnn67NGdTYJeEY&e=> .
