I can say with a great deal of confidence that I won't be doing the work. Like most, I don't have the time to do it with my existing (and ever growing) tasks in my regular "day job". Beyond that, I've already brought this up to my supervisor (CC'd on this email)

David, is it possible that if the communications team is interested in pursuing something like this ("hiring someone"), that they can move forward with the proposal (and budget analyst talks), and I could just serve as technical POC. I think you mentioned
Hi Chris,

I think this could be an interesting LDRD. The first big questions you need to answer are:

Who will do the work? If it is primarily you, then you will need to ask for funding to pay for the fraction of your salary for the time you expect to spend on it. You will also need to make sure your supervisor and division head are OK with you working that
much less on your regular “day job”. LDRD won’t fund things that are considered part of your regular duties.

You may also ask for money to hire someone to work on this. You would them supervise them. Expect it to take some time to hire them though so you’ll probably get 9 months at best during the first year.

Once you come up with a budget, you’ll need to get your Budget Analyst involved since they will add in all of the overhead. The B.A. probably doesn’t need to be involved for the preliminary proposal since you’ll have a month to get that done before the final
proposal is due.

I’m happy to help where I can. Keep me in the loop on any meetings.

Regards,
-David
Dear colleagues,
Jefferson Lab continues its commitment to innovative research with a call for proposals for funding in Fiscal Year 2021 (Oct. 2020 through Sept. 2021) under the Laboratory Directed Research & Development Program. The LDRD is an important element in Jefferson
