Dear George

Thank you for inviting me, I should really like to be there and contribute.

However, I am on hazardous duty in France and cannot attend.
Please note that I am not paid extra for this extraordinary service and I face near death each day at the hands of the French.
Even now the French strikers have barred gasoline delivery nationwide.
This deadly fuel shortage will be worse than the Zombie apocalypse!

On a serious note target shielding could be a concern and may be another good application of JLAB's neutron shielding materials.

Target cooling will be interesting since Gd melts at 1587 Kelvin is another concern.Maybe gaseous Helium?
Helium is used in High Temperature gas cooled reactors as the core coolant and does not become activated.

Cheers

Paul

Subject: Isotope production target design idea session

We are in the process of pulling together a research proposal to DOE to
test medical isotope production on LERF and need to come up with a good
idea for the target hence this invitation for a thinking session. We
would like to produce Cu67 isotope in a liquid Gallium target after a 1
-2 mm thick tungsten (or similar) radiator.

Desirable characteristics of the target include:

ability to handle ~ 50 kW of incoming ebeam at ~ 50 MeV

ability to load and remove to a shipping container the irradiated
Gallium with a minimum of handling

compatibility with, no introduction of additional, trace copper

robustness and reliability

Other characteristics can be discussed at the meeting which I propose to
happen tomorrow Tuesday 5/24 1-4 pm EDT. If that is a bad time for
you please suggest a couple of other slots this week. If I get a quorum
I will schedule a room and notify you.
