[Isotope-prod] [EXTERNAL] Notes for isotope target working session

All,
Sorry we could not be at the meeting yesterday. I would like to share these notes with you:

1. Solution targets per se is becoming a desirable approach even for cyclotron irradiation for isotope production. Will emphasize this novelty for Cu-67 production from liquid Ga.
2. Recent research (see attached) demonstrates PET isotope production from liquid targets, ala, 18O(p,n)18F cyclotron production of 18F. For example, production of 68Ge from proton irradiation of liquid Ga target (see attached). These will be good references for our application, also they describe target transfer mechanisms which we can learn from. The same approach is also being considered for the production of other isotopes, including using 200MeV protons (e.g. at BLIP)
3. Ga oxide has also been investigated, but this must be encapsulated in high heat conductivity material, such as Nb. Nb is a conventional encapsulation material, due to its chemical resistance against oxidation in hot liquid Ga. Along with W, Nb, Mo and Ta can also be considered as liquid Ga target inserts. Non-interaction of the insert with Ga and Cu is an important requirement.

The attached material is useful for us, and we could discuss it in the next meeting, but it gives us a good source of feasibility, albeit it is based on proton charged particle irradiations in cyclotrons.

I hope this is helpful,

Jamal

No problem! We had a very useful session and got a lot of ideas and questions on the table.

George
