***Help us keep your JBLE Golf Courses in GREAT Shape***
If you have played golf around the Tidewater and Richmond area you have
certainly seen that the wet spring followed by the hot and dry summer has
taken its toll on the greens of many golf courses. Our JBLE Golf
Superintendents have done a great job keeping your JBLE Golf Courses in
wonderful shape; heads and shoulders above the competition. The team at
Eaglewood led by Chris Davis and the team at The Pines led by Jake Adams
have done a wonderful job this summer, so please give them a word of thanks
when you see them out on the courses. To keep the golf courses in great
shape we need your help. Please remember to fix your ball marks on the
greens and rake the bunkers put sand in your divots and we will take care of
the rest. Answers to the two most frequently asked questions: Rakes go IN
the bunkers after you rake them (not a USGA rule, but a recommendation from
us - if your ball hits the rake and it stays in the bunker...well...you were
in the bunker in the first place) and the next question is how to fix a ball
mark...this will be answered in my tips from the pro section below. Thank
you for your help in keeping the JBLE Golf Courses in GREAT Shape!
***Tidewater Military Golf Scramble - Saturday 24 September***

make sure you get your team entered soon. Each team will declare which
branch of the service they are representing. There will be prizes for top

***BUS TRIP - The Currituck Club - Wednesday 28 September***
We are very excited to be taking our next JBLE Golf Bus Trip later this

one of the most beautiful waterfront golf courses you will find on the east
coast. The cost for this trip is $80 per person which covers your golf,
cart, range balls and transportation. The bus will leave the parking lot at
The Pines at 0600 on Wednesday 28 September and will return later that day.
The trip is limited to the first 24 who pay at the time of sign up. This is
a private golf course that will cost you over $120 to play this time of year

***Evening Par 3 League LAST WEEK - This Tuesday evening - 1730 - Eaglewood
Golf Course***
This week's evening par 3 league will take place at Eaglewood Golf Course.
This will be out last week this fall. Don't worry this will definitely
return with longer days come springtime! For more information or to sign up
just call the course hosting the week you want to play. Come and go as you
please - this is not a commitment league and will not have a running league
competition, instead each week will be a fun outing on its own.
***PGA Professional Tip of the Week - How to properly fix a ball mark***
I often get asked what is the proper way to fix a ball mark on the green.
The following is from www.about.golf.com and is one of the best descriptions
I have found on how to properly fix a ball mark. The first step in
repairing ball marks is to take your ball mark repair tool and insert the
prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Note: Do NOT insert the
prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression. The
next step is to push the edge of the ball mark toward the center, using your
ball mark repair tool in a "gentle twisting motion," in the words of the
GCSAA. This is the step where golfers who incorrectly "repair" ball marks
usually mess up. Many golfers believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to
insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the
crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball
mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of
the depression upward only tears the roots, and kills the grass. So
remember:
Wrong: Using the prongs as levers to push up the bottom of the depression.
Right: Using the prongs to push grass at the edge of the depression toward
the center Once you've worked around the rim of the ball mark with your
repair tool, pushing the grass toward the center, there's only one thing
left to do: Gently tamp down the repaired ball mark with your putter or foot
to smooth the putting surface. If you need help with this or any other part
of your golf game please contact one of our PGA golf professionals who will
be happy to help you improve.
