I was going to send this only to our new members but on an afterthought
decided to send it to<br>
all league members. We do have a large number of New Members this
year! and that is Great.<br>

This note is intended for those new to the game or others who have
never looked at a rule<br>
book before.<br>
Most of the league has heard about the rules of golf.<br>
If you haven't already done so, check out the <a href="http://www.usga.org">USGA</a> pages referred to on our <a href="http://www.jlab.org/intralab/committees/jag/sports/golf/">golf
home
page</a>.<br>
If you don't have a little rule book see some of our USGA member
players and see if they have<br>
an old one (better than none) to carry with you or read a little. We
will still have discussions<br>
about what the rules are, but that is the source of them. they do
change and keeping up with those<br>
is easy by using the USGA pages.<br>
Several very basic ones are<br>
1) Any time you attempt to strike the ball and miss, "thats a stroke
- count it" the key word here is<br>
"attempt" ( that is, you fully intended to hit the ball) on this
YOU are THE JUDGE.<br>
2) On the teeing ground, you take a practice swing and accidentally
strike the ball on or off of the tee<br>
That is not a stroke - re-tee or replace the ball (even if
you have to go get it) <br>
3) unintentionally striking the the ball, through the green
(after
teeing off and before going in the whole),<br>
is a stroke. Count it! and play the next one from the new
location.<br>
4) in hazards, including sand traps, You may not ground your club
nor take a practice swing which strikes the hazard <br>
except for the actual stroke taken. If you don't know what
constitutes a hazard, ask someone or look it up in the rules.<br>
Hazards are sand or water or areas marked as hazards like
the cliffs at Pebble Beach and the rocks, they are delimited<br>
by RED stakes or lines. A ball touching a line is in the hazard<br>
<br>
5) Golf etiquette - main rule don't talk or walk around while members
of your playing group are hitting or putting.<br>
<br>
There are many more rules but they all make good sense and they are
designed to make the game easier to play<br>
and allow us to take some penalty shots in lieu of trying to make shots
that are impossible for us - "unplayable lies"<br>
