"Feasibility Test of Large Rapidity Drell Yan Production at RHIC"

 LC Bland
 BNL

There are common objectives at RHIC, Jefferson Lab and a future
electron-ion collider (EIC) to understand the quark and gluon structure
of the proton. Perturbative QCD provides a means of describing
observables for p+p/p+nucleus collisions and deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) in terms of universal distribution and fragmentation functions.
Recent experiments aimed at understanding proton spin structure have
shown the importance of spin-correlated, transverse-momentum-dependent
distribution functions, that describe orbital motion of quarks and
gluons. Color-charge interactions are required for these functions to
produce transverse single spin asymmetries. There is a firm theoretical
prediction that these color charge interactions change sign between
semi-inclusive DIS and di-lepton production, through the Drell Yan (DY)
process, in polarized p+p collisions. This talk will present plans for
a feasbility experiment at RHIC, aiming to test these theoretical
predictions by measuring the analyzing power for DY in the forward
direction. Results from the feasibility experiment can impact designs of
future forward detectors aimed at quantifying effects from saturation of
the gluon density at low x in heavy nuclei. The DY process is expected
to be the most robust probe of universality between p+p/p+nucleus and
DIS, with the latter being a focus at the upgraded Jefferson Lab and a
future EIC.
