*"Constraining Quark Transversity through Collins
Asymmetry Measurements in Polarized pp
Collisions at STAR"

Robert Fersch
University of Kentucky*

Abstract:

Quantifying the transverse spin structure of the proton is of fundamen-
tal importance to its complete description in a collinear partonic frame-
work, yet transversity remains poorly constrained relative to other fun-
damental degrees of freedom. The required "Collins-Sivers separation"
of transversity-dependent and Transverse Momentum-Dependent (TMD)
terms can be achieved through the measurement of pion asymmetries
within reconstructed jets about their momentum axes in pp collisions.
The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) provides reconstruction of jets
and charged pion tracking at ?s=200 GeV, allowing for measurement of
the Collins Asymmetry for quark momentum fraction hxi ? 0.2 to con-
tribute to a global analysis of transverse degrees of freedom in the proton.
