*"DIRC Detectors: from BaBar to PANDA and Beyond" *

Particle identification (PID) is a key requirement for many modern
high-energy physics experiments. Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors
are capable of providing excellent hadronic PID for a wide range of
particle momenta. A DIRC (Detection [of] Internally Reflected Cherenkov
[light]) is a distinctive, compact RICH subtype first used in the BaBar
detector. It uses flat, rectangular cross section Cherenkov radiators
made from a solid material, typically fused silica, to generate
Cherenkov light and transport it by total internal reflection to the
photon detectors. The successful operation of the BaBar DIRC from
1999-2008, which achieved pi/K separation of 2.5 standard deviations or
more up the 4 GeV/c momentum with high efficiency and purity, motivated
a number of R&D efforts to further improve on the BaBar DIRC design and
extend the DIRC range to higher momenta. After an introduction to the
basic principles of DIRC detectors I will discuss the experience with
the BaBar DIRC and review the design of the DIRC counters at the Belle
II, SuperB, and PANDA experiments as well as R&D ideas for DIRC systems
at future experiments such as the EIC central detector.
