"From QCD to ab initio Nuclear Structure with Point Nucleons and Back
Again" *

The vision of solving the nuclear many-body problem with fundamental
interactions tied to QCD via chiral perturbation theory appears to be
gaining credibility. The goals are to preserve the predictive power of
the underlying theory, to test fundamental symmetries with the nucleus
as laboratory and to develop new understandings of the full range of
complex nuclear phenomena.

With a non-relativistic approach based on chiral perturbation theory as
a starting point, I introduce the Quark Cluster Model of Pirner and Vary
and associated percolation concepts. This model hypothesizes a
transition from physics dominated by hadronic degrees of freedom to
quark-gluon degrees of freedom at an intermediate momentum transfer
regime characteristic of the chiral symmetry breaking scale. The "back
again" route adopts results from the ab-initio long-range physics
(momentum transfers below the chiral symmetry breaking scale) to
constrain the short range probabilities (and associated phenomena at
momenta higher than the chiral symmetry breaking scale) via
orthnormality and completeness. DIS scattering data on light nuclei
present important test cases for mapping this transition.
