/The Detection of Gravitational Waves and Observation of Black Holes in
the Vacuum of Deep Space/
*Abstract*
In the early hours of September 14, 2015, our understanding of dynamical
gravity changed from theoretical to experimentally confirmed. A
boundary in the way we perceived the Universe was crossed and a new way
of observing the universe became available. General Relativity expanded
from the province of theory to the realm of experiment. In this
colloquium I will discuss the LIGO project, the physics behind its
interferometers, and the first direct detection of gravitational-wave
events.
