Extracting (un)polarized cross sections for pion photoprodcution off the neutron from deuteron data

Abstract:

Data for photon-induced meson productions off the deuteron are primary source to obtain data for the photo-reactions on the neutron. However, extracting the neutron-target data is not a trivial issue because of nuclear effects such as the Fermi motion and final state interactions (FSI). We develop a model for pion photoproductions on the deuteron taking account of these nuclear effects. We study how much the FSI change unpolarized and polarized cross sections for the pion photoproductions off the deuteron. Then we also examine if kinematical cuts used in experimental analyses can remove the FSI effects. Finally we extract (un)polarized differential cross sections of the single nucleon from the photon-deuteron cross sections, and examine how the extracted cross sections could be different from the free-nucleon cross sections.
