/From Light Hadrons to Charm: Early Results from the GlueX Experiment/

Abstract:

/The primary goal of the GlueX experiment is to study gluonic degrees of
freedom in QCD by mapping the light meson spectrum, with a focus on
searching for and studying hybrid mesons. GlueX uses the new 12 GeV
electron beam at JLab to generate a photon beam peaking at 9 GeV with a
high degree of linear polarization, incident on a hydrogen target
surrounded by a solenoidal spectrometer. The massive photoproduction
data set being collected by GlueX also enables the study of a wide
variety of physics topics. I will discuss the current status of the
experiment, present several results from our commissioning run,
including the first observation of the charmed meson J/psi at Jefferson
Lab, and discuss the future outlook of the experiment./
