The Form Factor Frontier: Nailing Down Nuclear Structure
Abstract:
Electromagnetic form factors describe the spatial distribution of charge in nuclei and nucleons making them fundamental to understanding internal nuclear structure. New 3He and 3H form factors extracted from global cross section fits of modern data will be discussed. Shifts in the 3He magnetic form factor and conflicts between theory and experiment motivate new measurements. Hall C experiment, E12-06-121A, will use a double polarization asymmetry technique to measure the 3He form factors. This first ever high Q2 measurement of the 3He form factors with polarization observables offers many advantages over Rosenbluth separation techniques.
In the 12 GeV era JLab is uniquely situated to make new and increasingly precise form factor measurements. The Super BigBite Spectrometer program in Hall A will explore the nucleon form factors in the GMn, GEn , and GEp experiments. An overview of these experiments and their scientific importance will be given. Integral to these experiments is the Hadron Calorimeter (HCal) which will detect scattered protons and neutrons. HCal's design and preliminary commissioning results will be presented.
