Tagged Structure Functions and the BONuS experiment with CLAS12

Abstract:

The proton structure function is known with high accuracy allowing for a well-known description of the u Parton Distribution Function (PDF). On the other hand, the neutron structure function, although with data as rich as proton, is not extracted directly but from deuterium, due to the lack of free neutron targets, carrying a lesser description of the d PDF. A solution is the use of tagged structure functions, via a Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering experiment, to determine the neutron structure function from deuterium under conditions where the neutron could be considered as a free nucleon. In this talk, I will present the method and its application to the near future BONuS experiment at CLAS12. I will also briefly present other experiments which will make use of tagged structure functions.
