First Results from the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab

Abstract:

The early 2000s measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, characterized as the anomaly aμ≡ (gμ-2)/2, at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) differs with the theoretical prediction at the 3.7σ level, perhaps hinting at the existence of Beyond the Standard Model physics. To address this discrepancy, the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab has been designed to determine aμ to a precision of 140 parts per billion, a four-fold improvement over the BNL measurement. In this talk, we report the results from the Run 1 physics data set (a small fraction of the total data accumulated to date), with an uncertainty of 460 parts per billion, which is 15% smaller than the BNL uncertainty. Additionally, an overview of the experimental technique will be presented, along with a detailed discussion of key aspects of the measurement.
