Proton Radius and Spin Puzzles: Insights from
the MUSE and SpinQuest Experiments
Abstract:
The proton, a fundamental building block of matter, remains an intriguing subject in nuclear and particle physics, with unresolved questions surrounding its radius and the origin of its spin. Despite over a century of investigation, challenges such as the “proton radius puzzle” and the origin of proton spin continue to drive research efforts. In this talk, I will explore these issues through the lens of two significant experiments: MUSE, which investigates the proton’s size using electron and muon scattering, and SpinQuest, which aims to measure the Sivers function for sea quarks to uncover evidence of non-zero orbital angular momentum of light antiquarks in the nucleon. By analyzing these two experiments, I will discuss how recent advancements in experimental techniques are enhancing our understanding of proton structure and addressing unresolved questions in the field.
