Decoding the proton: dispatches from the PDF-Lattice frontier

Abstract:

Precisely determining the nucleon's parton distribution functions (PDFs) with robust and reproducible uncertainties is vital to the reach and theoretical interpretation of a wide class of high-energy and nuclear physics experiments. At a more basic level, reliable PDF extractions also provide a central proving ground to test our grasp of QCD as a fundamental theory of nature. In this talk, we explore intersections among PDF and related QCD global analyses, recent progress in lattice QCD calculations, and exciting developments in computational methods, including AI/ML techniques. Special focus is given to the core role of uncertainty quantification in understanding the PDFs and lattice-gauge calculations; in this vein, we highlight opportunities for mutually beneficial development in both areas. Ultimately, we expect that further integrating these approaches will enhance our knowledge of QCD, open new avenues to test the standard model, and offer new collaborative opportunities spanning particle and nuclear physics.
