Physics Division Colloquium
Dr. Keith Furutani
 Mayo Clinic
Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy (CIRT)
Abstract:
On November 2019 Mayo Clinic Florida (MCF) announced that it would be building the first Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy (CIRT) center in the USA in Jacksonville, Florida. The building in near completion with particle therapy equipment installation beginning this year. The Mayo Clinic Florida Treatment Control System (MCF TCS) is an advancement on previous particle therapy treatment facilities designed specifically for motion management. The Mayo Clinic Florida Treatment Planning System (MCF TPS) is a GPU Monte Carlo calculation including nuclear modelling designed to provide both fast and accurate ion beam radiation biological dosimetry and includes robust optimization, adaptive planning and real time patient specific quality assurance. Finally, the Mayo Clinic Florida Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MCF MKM) is an advancement and yet consistent with previously clinically used radiation biological models such as the modified MKM (mMKM) used in Japan. This seminar will first give an overview of the design and construction of the MCF CIRT center and then the remainder of the seminar will answer any further details pertaining to audience interest; perhaps Control System design, Treatment Planning design, or Radiation Biological modeling.
