    I will discuss the progress made in understanding the excited

    spectrum of hadrons within QCD<br>

    using lattice methods. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of

    gluonic excitations in the <br>

    spectrum, and on recent advances in determining properties of

    excited mesons as unstable<br>

    resonances, decaying into meson-meson pairs.
