In support of the Virginia Science Festival, Jefferson Lab is hosting
two special evening presentations in October:
---
Tuesday, October 7th, 2014 -- Studying the Building Blocks of Matter
Since ancient times, humans have inquired about what makes up the
world around them. In antiquity, the Greeks believed the world to be
made up of earth, water, air, fire and the aether. Today, researchers
at Jefferson Lab study quarks and gluons: what we now believe to be
the fundamental building blocks of the atomic nucleus. Jefferson Lab's
research on the building blocks of matter will be presented along with
a discussion about why you should care.
---
Thursday, October 9th, 2014 -- Liquid Nitrogen Show!
Nitrogen. As a gas, it makes up nearly 80% of the air aound us. If
it's cooled enough, it changes from a gas to a liquid. Then, the real
fun begins! Join us as we explore how everyday objects change when
they are cooled to -321°F and discover how these low temperatures help
Jefferson Lab scientists learn about the inner workings of atoms!
---
These presentations are free and open to students and adults with an
interest in science. Both presentations begin at 7:00 pm in CEBAF
Center Auditorium and last for about an hour. Seating in the CEBAF
Center Auditorium is limited to about 260 people. Seating is on a
first come, first served basis. Unfortunately, people arriving once
capacity has been reached will be turned away.
Due to security concerns, persons 16 years old or older may need to
show a picture ID to Lab Security Officers. Vehicles and hand carried
items may be inspected.
Not able to attend in person? The presentations will be recorded and
will be available for on-demand viewing from the Science Series Video
Archive (http://education.jlab.org/scienceseries/archive.html) at a
later date.
