"DIRC Detectors"
Greg Kalicy
Old Dominion University
Abstract: The DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) is a novel
type of Cherenkov ring-imaging detector. It was first, and up to now only, used in
the BABAR detector at SLAC as its main hadronic particle identification system.
During more than 8 years of very successful operation this robust and stable system
inspired several new experiments to include DIRC system in their designs or upgrade
plans - including GlueX. This talk will show how the original DIRC was modified to
fit in different environments, including DIRC at EIC which plans to significantly push
the performance level of this technology well beyond the state-of-the-art. The main
challenges in designing and building DIRC detectors will be discussed.
