2 YEAR TERM POSITION

POSITION POSTED:OCTOBER 14, 2015

SALARY RANGE: $51,500 - $77,300

Hall B at Jefferson Lab has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow with
expertise in electromagnetic nuclear or particle physics. Hall B is in
the process of finalizing its upgrade with the completion of the CLAS12
detector system, a DOE funded part of the energy upgrade of the
Jefferson Lab CEBAF accelerator to 12 GeV beam energy and the
construction of new experimental equipment that broadens the science
reach of the Lab. CLAS12 is expected to be ready for operation by the
end of 2016 and first physics beam is expected in early 2017.

A broad physics program has already been approved that uses the CLAS12
detector covering programs to study the nucleon structure in a
multi-dimensional representation by measuring deeply virtual exclusive
processes to access the generalized parton distribution (GPDs) and
transverse momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs). Other programs
include the search for hybrid meson, the study of nucleon resonances at
short distances, the measurement of polarized parton distributions
function at very high x_B using polarized beam and polarized hydrogen
and deuterium targets as well as the short distance behavior of nuclear
correlations in polarized nuclei. The postdoctoral fellow will work
along side the staff scientists on the preparation and execution of the
CLAS12 experiment, on the data calibration and physics analysis. It is
expected that the successful candidate will play a major role in the
development of on-line and off-line monitoring and data calibration
tools, and participate in the development of offline reconstruction
software. The candidate is expected to lend general support to the joint
efforts of the CLAS collaboration and its new CLAS12 detector systems.
Hall B also offers wide opportunities for physics analysis of data
already taken with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at
beam energies of up to 6 GeV, and the preparation of new experimental
proposals to be run with the upgraded CLAS12 detector. There are also
opportunities for involvement in the development of the science program
and the detector development for the proposed Electron Ion Collider
(MEIC). Involvement at a modest level in this initiative is encouraged.

The position will be available immediately for a 2 year term.

*Position Requirements*

A PhD in electromagnetic nuclear or particle physics or an equivalent
combination of education and specific training. Experience with the
operation of large spectrometer experiments and demonstrated ability to
pursue physics data analysis are required. Therefore, software
experience is important, a demonstrated knowledge of C++ and Java
programming languages is a plus.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and arrange to have letters
from two references sent to: Linda Ceraul (ceraul at jlab.org).

Jefferson Lab is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

*Mental Requirements*

Ability to comprehend, formulate, and communicate highly abstract
concepts
