"Resonances and QCD"
Raul Briceno
Jefferson Lab
Abstract: A large class of particles observed in experiments live for around 10^-23 seconds,
and then decay into other particles which are then detected. These very short-lived states
are known as "hadronic resonances" and are composed of quarks and gluons. These resonances
play a crucial role in a wide range of important phenomenological processes - including those
explored here at the lab. It is by now well accepted that the mechanisms for the production
and decay of these particles should be well described by the fundamental theory of quark and
gluons, namely quantum chromodynamics (QCD). However, the non-perturbative nature of the theory
has left us with a connection between hadronic resonances and QCD that is fuzzy at best. In this
talk I discuss some of the first steps taken towards bridging this gap. This progress has been
made possible by recent advances of lattice QCD, which I will discuss in some detail.
