"An Overview of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing: How to get what you want the first time."
Tim Michalski
Jefferson Lab
Abstract: Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) has been around since the early 1940's. It
serves as a common language between the engineers and designers and those fabricating and
inspecting parts and assemblies. This common language serves as the best means to convey design
intent. GD&T can more accurately define the dimensional requirements and allowable tolerances for
a part. Proper application of GD&T will ensure the part defined on the drawing has the desired form,
fit and function, while maximizing allowable tolerances. Effective application of GD&T has a direct
impact on cost and quality while effectively communicating what is important (and what is less
important) in a design.
