*The 32nd Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies Program at
  Jefferson Lab*

      *May 30-June 16, 2017*

Applications are now being accepted for HUGS 2017 to be held at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia, USA. *Deadline for student
support consideration is March 10th, 2017.*

With support from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and
Jefferson Science Associates (JSA), the 32nd Annual Hampton University
Graduate Studies (HUGS) Program at the Thomas Jefferson National
Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is scheduled to run from Tuesday,
May 30 to Friday, June 16, 2017. Students will arrive on Monday, May 29
and depart on Saturday, June 17.

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is a summer school designed for
experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics graduate
students who have finished their coursework and have at least one year
of research experience in these fields. Students who are well into a
research project are also encouraged to apply. The program is
simultaneously intensive, friendly, and casual. All lecturers are
internationally renowned and leaders in their fields. The students will
be housed on site at Jefferson Lab, and there will be many opportunities
to interact with Jefferson Lab staff, as well as the lecturers, other
graduate students and visitors. Acceptance into the program is competitive.

The 2017 school will focus on experimental and theoretical topics of
high current interest in strong interaction physics. In particular,
students will receive excellent insight into the physics to be studied
at Jefferson Lab and at the future Electron-Ion Collider in the upcoming
years, as well as related topics of interest in nuclear and particle
physics. Speakers and topics this year include:

  * Introduction to QCD - Jianwei Qiu (Jefferson Lab)

  * Electron Scattering Experiments – Wouter Deconinck (William and Mary)

  * Fragmentation Functions and Global QCD Fits – Emanuele Nocera
    (Oxford University)

  * Hadron Spectrum from Experiment: A Window on Color Confinement -
    Michael Pennington (Durham University)

  * Nuclear Structure Studies and Short-Range Correlations – Or Hen (MIT)

  * Statistical Methods and the Physics of Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions
    – Enrique Ruiz Arriola (University of Granada)

  * The Science and Technology of the Electron-Ion Collider – Rik
    Yoshida (Jefferson Lab)

In addition to the main lectures, the school will offer topical seminars
by Jefferson Lab researchers. At the end of the school and as an
integral part of it, students will have the opportunity to present a
short seminar on their current research.

We will be able to offer a limited number of fellowships that will cover
lodging at the SURA Residence Facility, where kitchen facilities are
available, and contribute towards meal expenses.

To apply to the HUGS 2017 at Jefferson Lab summer school, please visit
http://www.jlab.org/hugs/ and submit along with your personal data, a
request for consideration of acceptance into the program, and arrange
for one letter of recommendation (ideally from your Ph.D. advisor) to be
separately sent to the address below. Submission as such before the
deadline noted below will automatically place the student in the
standard fellowship competition.

*The deadline for student support application is March 10th, 2017.*
Applications to the school will still be accepted after this date but
will not be included in the fellowship competition. *Students will be
notified by March 24th, 2017 of acceptance.*
