"Probing the nuclear glue with the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)"

Abstract:
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will be the next-generation US QCD facility, aimed
at studying the (virtual) sea quarks and the force carriers of the strong interaction
- the gluons. In many ways it will be complementary to JLab 12 GeV, which probes the
valence quarks. The EIC will also provide the first opportunity to collide electrons
with nuclei, making possible to study several important phenomena. We do, for instance,
expect that the gluon field inside a nucleus will not be a simple sum of the gluons
inside the nucleons - and being able to measure it will provide new insights into how
complex matter is formed from simple constituents. We will also be able to, for the
first time, observe the recombination of gluons. Both of these measurements require
advanced detectors able to measure all outgoing nuclear fragments, and a good description
of what happens in the nucleus after the initial scattering.
